Congressman García's Message to Chicago Teachers, Students and Families
Statement
Yesterday Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04) released the following message in English and Spanish regarding the Chicago Teachers Union strike. You can view the message here:

"I'm the proud grandfather of Chicago public school students.
"As a union member early in my life, I learned first-hand the power of organizing and collective bargaining. Countless times I have stood with teachers, parents and students in Chicago, fighting for the resources the families in my district deserve, and I have been standing with you from day one during this strike.
"I understand there are a lot of worries for everyone right now. Parents are missing work days. Students are losing important academic and athletic opportunities. And teachers and staff are worried about paying their bills or losing their health insurance if the strike continues.
"Our teachers deserve the resources to continue supporting ALL our students and their families. We need to invest in a diverse pipeline of administrators and educators, more nurses, school counselors, as well as quality libraries and books. Parents deserve the peace of mind that comes with knowing that our children are learning in the best environment possible while they work. Our children deserve the best opportunities we can give them.
"As the strike continues today, I encourage all parties to keep negotiating to give the children and the teachers the resources they need. The decisions made right now will impact our communities for generations to come.
"I have kept lines of communication open with Mayor Lightfoot and CTU Leadership and I have confidence they will find a solution.
"It is time we bring equity and fairness to our students, teachers, and parents."

"Soy el orgulloso abuelo de estudiantes de las escuelas públicas de Chicago.
"Como trabajador miembro de una union al principio de mi carrera, aprendí el valor del activismo y la negociación colectiva. He apoyado innumerables veces a los maestros, padres y estudiantes en Chicago, luchando por los recursos que las familias de mi distrito merecen, y he estado con ustedes desde el primer día en esta huelga.
"Sé que hay mucha preocupación para todos en este momento. Los padres tienen que faltar al trabajo. Los estudiantes están a punto de perder importantes oportunidades académicas y atléticas. Y los maestros y el personal escolar están preocupados por pagar sus cuentas o perder su seguro médico.
"Nuestros maestros merecen los recursos para seguir apoyando a TODOS nuestros estudiantes y sus familias. Necesitamos invertir en desarrollar administradores y educadores diversos, más enfermeras, consejeros escolares, libros y bibliotecas de calidad. Los padres merecen la tranquilidad de saber que nuestros hijos están aprendiendo en el mejor ambiente posible mientras ellos trabajan. Nuestros hijos merecen las mejores oportunidades que podamos darles.
"Conforme la huelga continúa hoy, exhorto a todas las partes involucradas a seguir negociando para dar a los niños y a los maestros los recursos que necesitan. Las decisiones tomadas hoy tendrán un impacto para muchas generaciones futuras.
"He mantenido líneas de comunicación con la Alcaldesa Lightfoot y los líderes del sindicato CTU, y confío en que encontrarán una solución.
"Es hora de dar equidad y justicia a nuestros estudiantes, maestros y padres."
